Entre o Ser e o Devir / Between Being and Becoming

All truth is relative and needs to be put into context to be true. Even laws of mathematics, physics and chemistry that are considered absolute truths would not be so in other dimensions. Therefore, it is always important to consider the context when declaring/accepting something as true.

That said, within our standard life context, there is a truth that translates into the popular expression: “There ain’t such thing as a free lunch.” This expression is much deeper than saying that if you are eating or using something without paying, it means that someone is paying for you, because, most of the time, it is you who pays, without knowing it, because as Noam Chomsky said: “People not only don’t know what’s happening to them, they don’t even know that they don’t know.” And that is where the danger lies.

Many people find it interesting to have/receive something for free and end up being influenced and even “dominated” by the thought that they are taking advantage, when, in fact, they are being exploited in their ignorance and/or greed. It’s like walking on a treadmill thinking you’re winning the race, but you’re always in the same place.

But this goes beyond the eventual financial dependence. Often the value you pay is not monetary, but can be with your thoughts, your beliefs, your loyalty, your affection, your dignity. In other words, it becomes a form of control exercised by a person, an organization/company, the state/government, a religion/sect, etc. that will make their truth be accepted as absolute by you.

Knowledge is the only way for people to discern truths in their contexts and not accept absolute truths, and wisdom is the only way to understand that knowledge is also relative and is a never-ending journey.

For the greater good, in the name of people’s security, for our democracy, for our national sovereignty, against imperialism and other famous mottos, they are nothing more than powerful slogans historically used to unite people and justify actions of a small group of people who cover up dubious moral and ethical actions relegated even by those who shouldn’t relegate them. Again, we need to have a critical view to go beyond inflammatory speeches to find out who really benefits from these actions.

And these fiery speeches now deal with the regulation of social networks, which seems to be the new #1 enemy of national sovereignty or, more dramatically, of the poor citizen who cannot defend himself. With this “threat”, bureaucrats choose to protect people by limiting access to information with criteria defined by themselves.

But limiting any access to information is limiting someone’s freedom of choice, which is perhaps our greatest individual right. Each of us must be responsible for defining what to see/read/listen to and what not, according to our conscience and must have the opportunity to develop ourselves with our own choices.

I repeat once again, it is important to know who controls the censors, who are mere bureaucratic puppets, to understand the movement that is taking place and discover the real small tyrant group that wants to control us and who is raising their voice against it.

In Ancient Rome, emperors used the policy of panem et circenses to keep the population happy and alienated from the real issues that would affect them. Nowadays, the politics of alienation successfully follows the Roman model, but under a new name: social drugs & social media. What will be the next upgrade brought by AI ??? 

The topic of the moment is the regulation of artificial intelligence, which is a recurring theme in our history every time we find something capable of causing disruption in the status quo of society, with different technologies, discoveries and/or unorthodox social behaviors and thoughts, and the justification used has always been: the greater good.

But ultimately, what they want is to maintain control, and the greater good is an infallible justification for governments, corporations, religious leaders, and the media in general. Generating fear is the best way to prevent people from freeing themselves from the shackles that bind them to their saviors and maintain control of society by providing that “feeling” of security against the terrible enemies that threaten our existence.

We must always ask ourselves who controls the controller, the censor, the legislator, the preacher, the communicator, as they are just puppets that follow predefined scripts and, when they are no longer useful, they are replaced by other puppets with more appeal to the public to perform the eternal play of fear versus safety.

The power structures of nations and global organizations have long been eroded from within and now their exposure can no longer be masked. The pandemic may have been the spark that set fire to the theater of illusions and left the actors naked, with only their hypocrisy and unpreparedness. Now, the actors will try, at all costs, to transform this situation to keep the play going, with the support of their financiers, the true owners of the theater and writers of the play, no matter the damage this may cause to their audience, which is still trying to recover from the reality check of the fire.

​I know it’s not easy to notice the storm when you’re in the eye of the hurricane, but the institutions that we have chosen, throughout our history, to provide us with governance, seem to be weakening, and why not say, failing in their original mission, in each area of society: politics, economics, justice, science, journalism, religion, etc., whether due to the obsolescence of the model or poor execution or a mix of both.

In the past, phenomena of collective consciousness/unconsciousness often led to global situations of governance change, but the preparation time was much longer, as communications were more restricted, both in terms of scope and control of the means of communication by interested parties in maintaining the status quo.

Currently, despite several attempts to control communication, its pervasiveness and decentralization make this almost impossible, in addition to the fact that the health emergency acted as a wake-up call for people who began to clearly see the storm, having been displaced from the calm from the center of the hurricane. It is difficult to know what the new governance models will be like in each area, but it is certain that the ones we have will not survive for long.

There are countless possible scenarios and we already see many actors trying to influence the new model to keep them in a status quo similar to the current one, but regardless of the result, the transition will not be easy, resisting the new is one of the pillars of current models and comes shaping our collective and individual decisions for a long time.

The song “The Sound of Silence” by Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel has very powerful message because it is timeless and can be interpreted by each person, according to their own conscience.

Almost a decade ago, metal group Disturbed recorded a more emotional version compared to the original folk version, and this version highlighted its message even more. Written in the 60s, under the influence of the great increase in entropy that the world was experiencing with the cold war and other not so cold wars, with the cultural revolutions around the world and the new scientific discoveries that would take man to the moon and others not so pleasant situations. The lyrics in its third paragraph say something as current and profound as the voice of vocalist Dan Donegan from Disturbed:

​“And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence”

At this moment, it appears that humanity’s entropy is well above average, we urgently need more silence, moving our energy towards rationalism and meditation. My humble opinion.

Many of us associate starlight with the future of our species. This is a true dichotomy, as each light from a star that we see represents the past, events that occurred centuries, millennia or light years before we were born and at the same time represents our perspective for the future of humanity that we will not be here to see. Are we living in a cosmic illusion or are there mysteries in the cosmos that we have not yet deciphered? Very intriguing question, perhaps the answer lies in the microcosm within each of us.

Segundo Heráclito, não é possível pisar duas vezes no mesmo rio, pois o rio não é mais o mesmo, tampouco a pessoa seria a mesma, quando comparados ao momento do primeiro contato. Há diversas formas de interpretar isso, pois cada pessoa, como indivíduo, deve considerar seus conhecimentos e sua vivência e aplicá-los de forma a gerar uma interpretação que lhe convenha. A meu ver, só o fato de se repetir a ação já a torna diferente do que quando ela foi realiza pela primeira vez, pois os padrões de análise já seriam diferentes tanto para o autor da ação quando para um observador externo.

Resolvi, conscientemente, fazer uma experiência pessoal, não com um rio, mas com informações advindas de algumas fontes “fixas” como escrita, imagem e som. Busquei um livro, um filme/série e uma música que me marcaram há 3 décadas ou mais e com os quais não tive interação desde então.

O livro que me marcou profundamente foi o Homem que Calculava de Malba Tahan (pseudônimo de Júlio César de Melo e Sousa), que quando o li pela primeira vez, eu era um estudante que gostava de ciências e, especialmente, matemática, mas não dominava o conhecimento que adquiri posteriormente em décadas de estudo no colégio e na faculdade de engenharia. Ao relê-lo, as peripécias matemáticas do protagonista saíram do primeiro plano e uma visão mais ampla do ambiente em que se passava a narrativa, bem como, aspectos das relações humanas se sobressaíram e, claro, a importância do conhecimento e da experiência, sejam eles quais forem, para a maior liberdade do indivíduo em escolher seu caminho.

A série foi Viagem ao Fundo do Mar, que na época que assisti teve o efeito equivalente aos filmes de aventura de hoje nas crianças, com monstros, inimigos ocultos, espionagem, disputas navais, etc. Novamente, ao rever um episódio, notei como a série representava o cenário geopolítico da época, e como ela tratava os possíveis avanços tecnológicos e seus riscos para a humanidade, mas além disso, a relação entre os protagonistas que sempre fora, para mim, um item simples de hierarquia militar mudou completamente, a hierarquia é fundamental para a operação em ambientes desafiadores, como em um submarino sob ameaça, mas são os modernamente chamados soft skills que garantem a sobrevivência ou não da coletividade.

Finalmente, a música foi Cult of Personality do Living Colour, que na época me cativou muito pelo som, que considero um dos grandes riffs da década de 80, pelo refrão e pela performance da banda. Mas ao rever a música, acho que a letra e seu significado são totalmente atemporais, pois poderíamos substituir vários nomes de personalidades citados por nomes atuais sem perder a mensagem. Nessa nova experiência, a frase que mais me chamou atenção foi “I exploit you still you love me”, além é claro do quão profunda é a mensagem sobre a falsa sensação de segurança e poder que os seguidores dos personalistas tem e do verdadeiro controle que tais “líderes” possuem, inclusive sobre a liberdade individual, que é retirada com a própria anuência dos seguidores, conscientemente ou não.

Conclusão, este é um experimento pessoal e seu resultado só tem valor para mim, mas se eu puder dar um conselho, tente fazer algo similar e veja se os resultados vão te surpreender também.

Nos ensinaram que o resultado de uma experiência só é valido dentro de determinadas condições. Mas, além disso, ao se observar um dado experimento, o resultado também precisa ser interpretado conforme a posição do observador, a sua capacidade de entender o experimento e o nível de sua interferência. Transferindo isso para a nossa vida cotidiana, e considerando que o observador é cada um de nós, conclui-se que o que temos como verdade é o resultado individual das condições que observamos e avaliamos dos acontecimentos ou “experimentos”.

Quando alguém, de alguma forma, propaga sua verdade e ela encontra eco nas verdardes de boa parte dos outros indivíduos, ela se torna uma verdade coletivamente aceita, momentaneamente, até que outra verdade coletiva venha a substituí-la. Algumas dessas verdades, porém, vem se mantendo, há séculos ou milênios, e são perpetuadas, seja pelas condições do meio, pela incapacidade dos indivíduos de entender o cenário e reacessar o “experimento”, ou porque, em torno destas verdades, surgiram instituições dedicadas a defendê-las a qualquer custo.

Nada de anormal até aqui, pois as pessoas são livres para escolher as verdades que melhor lhes convier, porém ao se tentar impor verdades e/ou acusar aqueles que tem verdades diferentes de herege, ímpio, conspiracionista, transtornado, negacionista, louco, etc… tira-se do indivíduo o livre arbítrio, por mais restrito que seja, da escolha e se tenta impor coercivamente a verdade coletivamente aceita naquele momento que, no fundo, acaba sendo um fim em si mesma, mantendo tanto os que a defendem como os que não compactuam com ela presos a uma disputa sem vencedores, exceto as tais instituições, cuja vitória é a autopreservação ao longo do tempo.

Cada indivíduo tem o direito de escolher a sua verdade e de mudar a qualquer momento, desde que por iniciativa própria, como processo natural de desenvolvimento ou “experimentação”, e não por imposição de algum dogma, poder ou teoria de qualquer natureza. E, não nos cabe, como indivíduo, julgar ou questionar a verdade de outro indivíduo, porque, simplesmente, não temos a capacidade para tal e o faríamos com base na nossa verdade indidual ou na coletivamente aceita, as quais, são ambas relativas e efêmeras.

Por mais contraditório que possa parecer para um blog, este texto não tem por objetivo angariar seguidores ou gerar discussões sejam de apoio ou crítica, apenas prover insumo para aqueles que estão em busca de suas verdades poderem pensar a respeito.
